MOBILE, Alabama -- Mobile Police Chief Micheal Williams and Mayor Sam Jones announced today the formation of Operation I.M.P.A.C.T., Integrated Municipal Police Anti-Crime Team to tackle gun and drug problems in Mobile.
The announcement comes after a spike in gun violence in Mobile that left one woman dead and one man on life support.
"This has made our community feel uneasy," Jones said during a news conference Wednesday at the Mobile substation in the R.V. Taylor community.
Jones said he has informed the police chief that "whatever resources" he needs to combat the latest crime wave the city will provide.
"We will not allow the criminal element to define our community," Jones said.
With a backdrop of police officers standing behind him, Williams said more than 50 officers are being assigned to go out into the community to tackle the problem of drugs and guns.
He said the police department has identified problem areas they plan to dispatch the new crime team into.
"Our message to the criminal element is that we will not tolerate the gun use and drug use in our city," said Williams.
The police chief said the first phase of the operation is to "sweep the streets" clean of illegal guns that are being used in crimes. He said it also involves identifying "troubled areas and violence hotspots" in the city.
Another phase, said Williams, is a Gun Buy Back program where gift cards from area retailers are given to people who turn in illegal firearms.
Phase three involves getting the citizens involved in providing police with information that could lead to the arrest of crimes involving illegal guns. A $100 reward will be given to those who come forward.
The last phase, said Williams, is a public awareness campaign with the help of citizen action groups, faith-based organizations and the public together to help.
He said the message the department wants to send is: "We are not going to tolerate violent crimes."
