How Much Paint? - Painting - DIY Chatroom - DIY Home ...
Assuming the walls are in good shape and you are not patching you might get by without a primer. If you are changing from oil to latex or vice versa especially you should prime to be safe. If you patch, you will have to at least spot prime the patches. Tint the primer to 40 percent or so of your new color formula. Whatever you decide, remember paint and primer do not come in the same can in spite of marketing hype! If you decide to prime everything, you will need 2 gallons. If you have not subtracted for windows and doors in that sfootage you might get by with 1 gallon.

As mentioned, good quality paint should cover about 350-400sf. Don't forget to factor in the ceiling if you are painting it the same color. And for a single room you can subtract for doors and windows if they are part of your 500sf estimate. I usually left them in figuring the client would have paint left for touch up.
Two coats of finish would be 1,000sf right (twice times 500sf)? I fear if you have subtracted for windows and doors and that is actual wall surface, 2 gallons might not stretch and you will need 3. You certainly do not need 5. However, if it is a color and sheen you would use somewhere else in the near future the price differential for buying in a 5 gallon bucket MIGHT make it appealing over buying 3 gallons. You have to see what deals are being cut. No reason to have gallons of paint you will not use laying around though.
Make sure to mix your gallons tinted together. It is unlikely there would be a major color difference in the tinting process but sometimes with tans and other light or really dark colors, a subtle change will be noticeable.
I always bought good quality but contractor grade roller covers for applying flat paint. 3/8 minimum but usually 1/2 for for smooth walls. Thicker if the walls were textured. 1-1.5 for things like brick. I find it hard to justify gallons and gallons of fresh water to rescue a $5 roller cover. I just wrapped them in plastic and stored them in a cool dry place until done with the job.

Although your accomplishments are the same, in the first scenario, the investor is infinitely more likely to fund your future growth. Why? First, because they?ve known you for six months. And second, because you told them that you were going to accomplish something, and then you did it. This breeds trust.
Meet potential investors early, forge real relationships with them and they will be much more likely to fund you.
4. Develop a formal business plan. To raise funding, you need a formal business plan. Your plan needs to credibly detail what your company is about and why it will be successful. As a wise investor once told me, ?I?m not going to entrust my money to an entrepreneur who can?t even put together a credible and professional business plan.?
5. Always be marketing. Raising funding is marketing. You?re marketing your business plan and company to prospective investors and lenders. Treat it like any other marketing endeavor. Find the best target customers. Find the best channels to reach them (e.g., introductions). Give them your best presentation possible. Then rinse and repeat.

The EU imposed tough sanctions against Iran last month, which included a freeze of the country's central bank assets and an oil embargo set to begin in July. Iran's Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi had warned earlier this month that Tehran could cut off oil exports to "hostile" European nations. The 27-nation EU accounts for about 18 percent of Iran's oil exports.
However, the Iranian action was not likely to have any significant direct impact on European supplies because both Britain and France had already moved last year to sharply curtail oil purchases from Tehran to less than 3 percent of their daily needs.
The EU sanctions, along with other punitive measures imposed by the U.S., are part of Western efforts to derail Iran's disputed nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at developing atomic weapons. Iran denies the charges, and says its program is for peaceful purposes.
The spokesman for Iran's Oil Ministry, Ali Reza Nikzad-Rahbar, said on the ministry's website Sunday that "crude oil exports to British and French companies have been halted."
"We have our own customers and have no problem to sell and export our crude oil to new customers," he said.
Britain's Foreign Office declined comment, and there was no immediate response from French officials.
The semiofficial Mehr news agency said exports were suspended to the two countries Sunday. It also said the National Iranian Oil Company has sent letters to some European refineries with an ultimatum to either sign long-term contracts of two to five years or be cut off.
Mehr did not specify which countries were sent the ultimatum, but Spain, Italy and Greece are among Europe's biggest buyers of Iranian oil.
Iran's targeting of Britain and France appeared to be a political decision to punish the two countries for supporting tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.
Sunday's announcement follows a flurry of contradictory signals by Iran about backlash against the EU for imposing a boycott on Iranian oil.
Last week, state media said Iran was planning to cut off oil exports to six EU nations, including France, but later reports said the nations were only told that Iran has no problem finding replacement customers for the European shipments.
The EU sanctions, imposed last month, were part of Western efforts to target Iran's critical oil sector in attempts to rein in Tehran's nuclear program.
Also on Sunday , the secretary general of Iran's central bank said a decision by SWIFT, an international banking clearinghouse used by nearly every country and major corporation in the world, to shut Iran out from its respected network will not harm the country.
"The country will not face any problems as a result of the SWIFT measures," Mahmoud Ahmadi was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency. He added that Iran has been "pursuing alternative solutions" since Western nations imposed sanctions on Tehran. He did not elaborate.
SWIFT said in a statement on its web site Friday that it will comply with expected instructions from the EU to cut off Iranian banks. SWIFT has previously brushed off international efforts to use its network to target countries or companies, telling enforcers that it does not judge the merits of the transactions passing through the portal.

In a remarkable feat of micro-engineering, UNSW physicists have created a working transistor consisting of a single atom placed precisely in a silicon crystal.
The tiny electronic device, described today in a paper published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, uses as its active component an individual phosphorus atom patterned between atomic-scale electrodes and electrostatic control gates.
This unprecedented atomic accuracy may yield the elementary building block for a future quantum computer with unparalleled computational efficiency.
Until now, single-atom transistors have been realised only by chance, where researchers either have had to search through many devices or tune multi-atom devices to isolate one that works.
"But this device is perfect", says Professor Michelle Simmons, group leader and director of the ARC Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication at UNSW. "This is the first time anyone has shown control of a single atom in a substrate with this level of precise accuracy."
The microscopic device even has tiny visible markers etched onto its surface so researchers can connect metal contacts and apply a voltage, says research fellow and lead author Dr Martin Fuechsle from UNSW.
"Our group has proved that it is really possible to position one phosphorus atom in a silicon environment - exactly as we need it - with near-atomic precision, and at the same time register gates," he says.
The device is also remarkable, says Dr Fuechsle, because its electronic characteristics exactly match theoretical predictions undertaken with Professor Gerhard Klimeck's group at Purdue University in the US and Professor Hollenberg's group at the University of Melbourne, the joint authors on the paper.
The UNSW team used a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) to see and manipulate atoms at the surface of the crystal inside an ultra-high vacuum chamber. Using a lithographic process, they patterned phosphorus atoms into functional devices on the crystal then covered them with a non-reactive layer of hydrogen.
Hydrogen atoms were removed selectively in precisely defined regions with the super-fine metal tip of the STM. A controlled chemical reaction then incorporated phosphorus atoms into the silicon surface.
Finally, the structure was encapsulated with a silicon layer and the device contacted electrically using an intricate system of alignment markers on the silicon chip to align metallic connects. The electronic properties of the device were in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions for a single phosphorus atom transistor.
It is predicted that transistors will reach the single-atom level by about 2020 to keep pace with Moore's Law, which describes an ongoing trend in computer hardware that sees the number of chip components double every 18 months.
This major advance has developed the technology to make this possible well ahead of schedule and gives valuable insights to manufacturers into how devices will behave once they reach the atomic limit, says Professor Simmons.

Stars line up to perform at Whitney Houston's funeral (omg!)
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Alicia Keys and actor Kevin Costner will take part in the funeral of Whitney Houston along with the pop star's godmother Aretha Franklin, her cousin Dionne Warwick and singer Stevie Wonder, her family spokeswoman said.
Houston will be laid to rest on Saturday after the noon (1700 GMT) service at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where she performed while growing up.
Police have urged the thousands of fans expected to crowd the area to stay home and watch the funeral which will be broadcast live.
The singer died in a Beverly Hills hotel room almost a week ago on the eve of the music industry's Grammy Awards. She was found underwater in a bathtub in her hotel room, according to police.
Other top names taking part in the program include Houston's mentor Clive Davis and Hollywood actor and producer Tyler Perry, who donated his plane to fly Houston's body from Los Angeles to Newark.
Singer Elton John, Beyonce and rapper Jay-Z, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby are also expected to attend the service, according to media reports. It is not yet known if Houston's ex-husband singer Bobby Brown will attend.
The death of the beloved pop star, who had a history of addiction to alcohol and cocaine, stunned the music world, her family and her fans.
Police plan to lock down the streets near Saturday's private funeral and have said there will be no procession from the funeral home to the church.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Coroner's Office has not released details of an initial autopsy and is awaiting results of tests for drugs, alcohol and other substances that may have been in her system.
Officials investigating her death have also issued subpoenas for her medical records after finding prescription drugs in her hotel room.
In Los Angles, two radio personalities of KFI AM 640 station's "The John and Ken Show" -- have been suspended after making disparaging comments and jokes about Houston and her addiction to drugs.

I am about to run wire for 8kw double oven, 120/240 4 wires, 80 feet one way. instruction says 'protection circuit recommended 40A'. However, i want to double check with calculation. not sure which method to use or none at all.  method A 50 amp breaker x .8 = 40 amp limit. method B method C, no calculation needed, variance already built in??? |

Moi aussi 2X as above not a contionous load at all. Just wired 8-3 avce 40 amp breaker and be done with it. Just be aware of junction box location so you will have to check the manufacter specs on location due it will varies a bit so be on safe side check it out. Merci,

Note that ovens cycle on and off to maintain the desired temperature. It is highly unlikely that both ovens would have cycled on and remained on together for a period of more than 3 hours, which is the defnintion of a continuous (as opposed to intermittent) load.

Not to hijack his thread, but if you know an appliance will run continuously like an air conditioner in south Texas, should it be considered a continuous load? My two 7.5 ton units run 18 hours per day in our 110 degree heat. They never cycle until we close the door and turn off the lights. David |

But did the HVAC contractor did look at the unit to make sure it is sized properly if sized properly it will cycle from time to time if it was undersized may have to upgrade to twin 10 tonnes units but there is a clevation with it is you will have to check the supply to see if they can handle addtional load for the A/C units. But I can understand some unit that can run almost contionuns they will design the circuit properly to handle that. The last 7.5 tonne unit I have see one Trane unit it did have dual compressours so it will adjust the compressour as need to for addtional load to keep it up on hevey demand. Merci,

The 8 gauge copper wire will be fine for the 80' (160' round trip) run in terms of wire resistance (.64 ohms per 1000'). The voltage drop at maximum draw (34 amps) will be about 3-1/2 volts or about 1-1/2 percent of 240 volts. When sizing the conductors for voltage drop purposes you do not multiply amperes by 1.25 for continuous loads. Then given the conductor size for amperage and, if applicable, continuous load and the conductor size for voltage drop, you choose the larger of the two. Air conditioners are considered continuous loads. The installation instructions should give a recommended breaker rating. Sometimes there is a maximum allowable breaker rating as well.

+1 on this post! During my 36 years working for a large electrical utility, I've seen a number of disasters from customer wiring without proper knowledge. If your calculations are in doubt or borderline I always recommend installing the next larger wire size. When cooking a holiday dinner many ranges are operated at or near maximum amperage for many hours which can generate a lot heat in the conductors & connections. For a given wire size and a given number of amperes the number of BTU or calories of heat generated per foot of wire is the same regardless of the length of the wire.
