A look at economic developments around the globe (AP)

A look at economic developments and activity in major stock markets around the world Thursday:

___

PARIS ? France and Spain sailed through their first long-term debt auctions since their credit ratings were downgraded by Standard & Poor's, a sign that politicians and the central bank have at least temporarily stemmed the spread of Europe's debt crisis.

___

LONDON ? Another set of successful bond auctions in Europe and renewed confidence in the continent's banks helped markets rally as investors awaited developments in Greece's debt-reduction talks with private creditors.

France's CAC-40 closed 2 percent higher, while Germany's DAX rose 1 percent. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares ended 0.7 percent higher.

___

TOKYO ? In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1 percent. South Korea's Kospi rebounded 1.2 percent after a losing session Wednesday. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.3 percent.

___

ATHENS, Greece ? Eurozone countries won't increase financial support for Greece if it fails to secure a bond-swap deal with private creditors, the country's foreign minister warned.

___

DUBLIN ? Ireland has achieved all austerity goals required to keep international loans flowing, having cut its 2011 deficit back below 10 percent of the value of the economy, the government and its international creditors said.

___

CAIRO ? Revenue in Egypt's vital tourism sector plunged almost 30 percent last year, the government said, as unrest following the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak stunted economic growth and forced the country to turn to the International Monetary Fund for help.

___

MANILA, Philippines ? The Philippines' central bank cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point to boost the economy while the inflation outlook is benign and the world economy is tilted toward a slowdown.

Israel says "very far" from decision to attack Iran

JERUSALEM | Wed Jan 18, 2012 12:38pm GMT

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on Wednesday any decision about an Israeli attack on Iran was "very far off."

Barak was speaking on Israel's Army Radio ahead of a planned visit this week by U.S. armed forces chief General Martin Dempsey that has triggered speculation Washington would press Israel to delay any action against Tehran's nuclear programme.

Asked whether the United States was asking Israel to let them know ahead of any assault against Iran, Barak replied:

"We haven't made any decision to do this," and added: "This entire thing is very far off."

Barak also suggested Israel was coordinating with Washington its plans about handling Tehran's nuclear project which Israel views as an existential threat.

"I don't think our ties with the United States are such that they have no idea what we are talking about," Barak said.

When pressed as to whether "very far off" meant weeks or months, Barak replied: "I wouldn't want to provide any estimates. It's certainly not urgent."

"I don't want to relate to it as though tomorrow it will happen," Barak said.

Iran says its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes.

Dempsey, the top U.S. military officer, is due to travel to Tel Aviv for talks this week in which Iran is certain to be one of the key topics. It will be Dempsey's first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in September.

In a November 30 interview with Reuters, Dempsey said he did not know whether Israel would alert the United States ahead of time if it decided to take unilateral military action against Iran. He also acknowledged differences in perspective between the United States and Israel over the best way to handle Iran and its nuclear programme.

Editor: Hacking might have occurred at 2nd tabloid (AP)

LONDON ? The editor of Britain's Daily Mirror tabloid says it's possible illegal phone hacking took place at the newspaper.

Richard Wallace told the country's media ethics inquiry on Monday that hacking "might well" have been going on at the Mirror in the early 2000s.

But he said he had no knowledge of it and insisted "ethical issues are embedded" within the culture of the newsroom.

Wallace's predecessor, CNN celebrity interviewer Piers Morgan, has told the inquiry that he didn't believe he ever listened to hacked voicemail messages while he was editor between 1995 and 2004.

The judge-led inquiry into press standards and ethics was set up in the wake of revelations about illegal eavesdropping at Rupert Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World.

Dan Evins, Founder Of Cracker Barrel Dies At 76

LEBANON, Tenn. -- The founder of the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store chain, Dan Evins, has died at 76.

The company said Monday that Evins ? known as Danny ? died Saturday in Lebanon, Tenn. No cause of death was given.

Evins opened his first restaurant in Lebanon, Tenn., in 1969. The restaurant catered to highway travelers and focused on offering Southern hospitality, country-style cooking and an associated gift shop that came to define the chain.

He fashioned the restaurant after the country stores of his youth in rural Tennessee and used a number of family recipes. The restaurant was named after the practice of customers gathering at country stores to share news and play checkers on top of an empty barrel that had been used to deliver crackers to the store.

Evins helped build the chain into a national brand as CEO from 1969 to 2001 and chairman until he retired in 2004. Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc., headquartered in Lebanon, Tenn., now operates more than 600 restaurants in 42 states.

"Danny was a straight-shooter and dedicated to authenticity. It was an honor and a responsibility that I took seriously to follow Danny as CEO, and then as chairman when he retired." Cracker Barrel Executive Chairman Michael Woodhouse said in a statement. "Danny was the keeper of this special brand for so many, many years, and he left us with a strong culture that values quality and honesty. He will be missed deeply."

Survivors include five children. A private funeral service was being planned.
