Nawaf Fares, a former provincial governor, is the second prominent Syrian to break with the regime in less than a week. Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass, an Assad confidant and son of a former defense minister, fled?Syria?last week, buoying Western powers and anti-regime activists, who expressed hope that other high-ranking defections would follow.

The high-level defections could be a sign that Assad's tightly wrapped regime is unraveling, but it was too early to be certain. There have been thousands of defections in the past, mostly low-level army conscripts, but until now no one as senior as the general and the ambassador had fled.

In a statement broadcast on the Arabic satellite channel Al-Jazeera, Fares said he was resigning and joining the opposition. Wearing a dark suit and reading from a prepared text in what appeared to be a large office, Fares harshly criticized Assad.

"I'm announcing from this moment on that I'm siding with the revolution in?Syria," he said, according to the Al-Jazeera translation into English. He called on all Syrians to abandon Assad.

"Where is the honor in killing your countrymen? Where is the national allegiance? The nation is all the people, not one person in particular," he said. "The allegiance is to the people, not to a dictator who kills his people."

It was not known where or when Fares recorded the statement.

Appointed to the Baghdad post four years ago, Fares was the first Syrian ambassador to?Iraq?in 26 years. Like Tlass, he is a member of the privileged Sunni elite in a regime dominated by Assad's minority Alawite sect.

Khaled Khoja, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council who is based in Istanbul, said Fares was "moving toward Turkey." Asked for details, Khoja said the information came from his own sources on the ground in?Iraq.

There was no immediate comment from either?Iraq?or?Syria. An operator who answered the phone at the Syrian Embassy in Baghdad said there was nobody at the embassy. When asked if the ambassador is currently in?Iraq, the operator said he did not know.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the U.S. had no confirmation of the defection as of Wednesday afternoon. But he said recent high-level defections from the Assad regime were "a welcome development."

He?wrote a blog post?declaring that FunnyJunk had "practically stolen [his] entire website."?FunnyJunk's owner responded?by claiming that Inman was threatening to sue him and removing any content which referenced "The Oatmeal."

That was the last Inman had heard from FunnyJunk, until June 2012, when he was served with papers explaining that the site's owner was threatening to file a federal lawsuit unless the cartoonist paid $20,000 in damages. Inman consulted a lawyer before posting the letter online, along?with his rebuttal and an explanation of what he'll do.?

The Oatmeal

This cheeky response to a legal threat began a successful charity fundraiser, but it also led to convoluted drama.

"I've got a better idea," Inman wrote. "I'm going to try and raise $20,000 in donations. I'm going to take a photo of the raised?money. I'm going to mail you that photo, along with this drawing of your mom seducing a Kodiak bear. I'm going to take the?money?and donate one half to the National Wildlife Federation and the other half to the American Cancer Society."

Inman's fundraiser ??which was dubbed "BearLove Good. Cancer Bad" ??was incredibly successful. He collected over $200,000 via a crowd-sourcing website called Indiegogo.

Hell hath no fury like a lawyer scorned
While Inman was raising money for charity though,?Charles Carreon, who at the beginning of the tale had simply been FunnyJunk's legal representation, was seething.

When I reached out to Carreon in early June, the attorney told me that he had to removed his contact information from his website due to the large number of people who'd contacted him after Inman's blog post went online.?

"I really did not expect that he would marshal an army of people who would besiege?my website and send me a string of obscene?emails," he said.

Carreon filed a lawsuit ??on his own behalf???against Inman, the charities he was raising funds for and more. He wanted to freeze the funds and to silence the criticism of his actions.

The situation quickly escalated and even freedom of speech fell on the line for a while ? as it often does whenever someone's Internet activity leads to a legal mess.?

Kurt Opsahl of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) ? a donor-funded nonprofit organization created to defend digital rights ? broke down the whole drama in a blog post, describing Carreon's initial legal threat?? the one which inspired the charity fundraiser?? "baseless" before proceeding to explain just how "outrageous" the attorney's legal demand was. The EFF teamed up with?Inman's attorney Venkat Balasubramani to fight Carreon's lawsuit.

The battle's done and the Internet kinda won
Shortly after Opsahl's legal breakdown,?a blog post on EFF's website?explained that Carreon dropped his "bogus" lawsuit against Inman.

"Matthew Inman spoke out against Carreon's threat of a frivolous lawsuit, in a very popular and very public way," the post quoted Opsahl as saying. "This was nothing more than a meritless attempt to punish Inman for calling attention to his legal bullying. We called him out on this in our briefs, so it's no surprise that Carreon was left with no choice but to dismiss."

?"We're very pleased that Carreon has seen that his lawsuit had no merit, and hope that this is the end of his abuse of the legal system," EFF Intellectual Property Director Corynne McSherry was quoted as adding.

All's well that ends with silly photos
Now that we've covered the basics of this convoluted story, you probably understand why Inman struggled to explain to his bank why he needed to withdraw over $200,000 in bills, if only for a little while.

"So there's this bear ... and he's having sex with a lady who's really overweight ... and I make comics ... $200,000 in cash," he started to describe the exchange before seemingly giving up. "I had to fill out a bunch of tax forms."

The money in Inman's photos isn't the money he raised for charity, mind you. In fact, Indiegogo already transferred the grand total to the?National Wildlife Federation and?American Cancer Society, split right down the middle.

In order to avoid further aggravating the situation with Carreon, Inman withdrew an amount equivalent to the fundraiser's total from his own account. The money was only out of his account for a couple of hours, for the photo shoot, before Inman redeposited it.

I reached out to Carreon, to see what he thinks about how this strange tale ended, but he hasn't responded yet. Maybe he's waiting to receive Inman's gift?? a photo of the money along with a framed drawing of a woman seducing a bear. I'm told that the package is being shipped out tomorrow, so Carreon won't have to wait long.

"[The situation is] an education in the power of mob psychology and the Internet," he told me back in early June. I have a hunch that he still stands by that comment.

Humanlike robot legs taking baby steps (+video)

Researchers at the University of Arizona have built a pair of legs that can walk like a baby thanks to a simple robotic nervous system.

A group of US researchers has produced a robotic set of legs which they believe is the first to fully model walking in a biologically accurate manner.

The first pair of biologically accurate robot legs can walk like clumsy human babies placed on a treadmill ? placing one foot in front of the other with surprising confidence.

The robot legs work despite having just a simple nervous system to control the hips. That is because the lower legs' reflex responses take over to complete the walking motion ? a possible explanation for how human babies can walk on treadmills without an adult's complete sense of coordination and balance.

"Interestingly, we were able to produce a walking gait, without balance, which mimicked human walking with only a simple half-centre controlling the hips and a set of reflex responses controlling the lower limb," said Theresa Klein, a Ph.D. student at the University of Arizona.

That "half-centre" represents a neural network in the human spinal cord that can send out muscle signals. The simplest neural network, the half-centre, fires off alternating signals to create the rhythm of walking.

Past walking robots have never tried including that nervous system feedback and the biological reflexes available to humans. The University of Arizona researchers built their robot with a neural controller ? the half-centre ? and leg sensors that are able to detect the weight of each step and report back to the neural controller.

The weight sensors join together with the robot's Kevlar straps that mimic leg muscles ? another fairly unique aspect of the walking robot. Mechanical control comes from four motors in the hip segment, three motors in the thigh and just one motor in the calf.

Such baby steps for robot walking could lead to better understanding of how human babies and patients with spinal cord injuries learn to walk. But they could also improve bipedal humanoid robots that the U.S. military wants on tomorrow's battlefields, or that rescue workers could deploy in disaster zones.

The research is detailed in the July 6 issue of the Journal of Neural Engineering.
